Jasmine Fragrance

IT CAN CHANGE THE WORLD ECONOMIC ORDER FOR BEST OR FOR THE WORST

SEVERAL weeks back, one of my friends, almost mutely whispered ‘Jasmine Fragrance’, very close to my ear; inquiring, what is latest on the front? I pleaded my ignorance on the subject. But he resolutely pressed for the matter and again conveyed very softly, “Jasmine fragrance – and you don’t know about it”! His inquisitive body language and gestures arouse immense curiosity within my brains regarding the particular ‘fragrance’, he was referring to. I personally and professionally being associated with flowers, and that too having special interest in medicinal and aromatic properties and importance of plants, vainly tried to relate his whisper to many facets of Jasmine as a flower and its aromatic properties. Use and importance of aromatic plants like Jasmine in human life can be traced over a much longer period of time, serving not only to please our urge for natural odors but to guide us in determining our life in an aesthetic and humanly order. As a significant part of human brain caters to olfactory functions, so our sense of smell lasts for long: may be Jasmine fragrance (revolution) will involve much of the world owing to its association with the extendedly lasting sense of ‘smell’.

In Tunisia the origin of Jasmine fragrance, an occurrence of official highhandedness and apathy (a trivial issue by usual administrative standards) spiraled into an epoch-making uprising, sweeping away a well fortified government and further escalating into a revolution with far-reaching result not only in many countries but many regions and continents. These protests of Jasmine Revolution were sparked by self immolation of Mohammed Bouazizi, a Tunisian on December 17, 2010. He was a street vendor who set himself on fire in protest against tormenting behavior and humiliation by a municipal official, a lady official to be precise. A vendor’s pride got hurt by highhandedness and callous attitude of the local administration, snowballing into an uprising of much greater scale. People’s anger against bad governance or governance devoid of people’s aspirations is like a volcano sweltering underneath; about to explode any moment it finds an opening. The social and political unrest existed in Tunisia for last three decades but Bouazizi’s act of braving against humiliation triggered a revolution- ‘Jasmine revolution’ giving people’s anger a vent and making Tunisia free from the clutches of dictatorship. Thus, Tunisian people decided to own, determine and change their future, hopefully for the best.

Jasmine fragrance at top of its diffusion is spreading like wild fire! From Tunisia to Egypt, Yemen, and many other Arab countries it is momentarily struggling in Libya against a revolutionary turned cruel dictator, Gaddafi. A few months back no one could dream of a rebellion inspired by people’s determination to fight against intractable governments in Tunisia, Egypt , Libya or any other Arab country ruled by self imposed autocratic presidents and tyrannical hereditary monarchs. History stands witness to the fact that people’s anger can be suppressed and people tyrannized with oppression for centuries but their desire for liberty and empowerment can never be made to decimate or die for ever; Jasmine fragrance stands witness to this fact. A tiny spark at an opportune time can ignite and invigorate the people’s pledge to fight against repression and no might or motivation, whatsoever, can come in between the mankind and his desire for independence. In case of Arab world majority of the governments and head of the governments are stooges and puppets of the mighty ‘west’ but even the might of the west could not help Hussini Mubark of Egypt to stand against the wishes of people. Helpless west is completely unable to influence and contain the uprising in many other Arab countries to safeguard its own interest of arms trade and crude oil exploitation. People’s power is supreme as ever and can take on the mighty and influential without any fear for death and annihilation.

Fragrance of revolution is not new but it keeps on changing its shape and form. Disintegration of erstwhile Soviet Union was manifestation of people’s revolution to fight against forced integration against people’s wishes and aspirations. Fall of Berlin wall and reunification of Germany was people’s desire to fight against the suppression. East German unrest in 1989 forced the authorities to allow people to cross over to West Germany. Ultimately after years of suppression and restrictions, supreme people’s power prevailed over the German authorities and Berlin wall was torn into pieces. Jasmine revolution is not the only revolution related to plants or flowers; Lebanon’s 2005 Cedar Revolution and Portugal’s 1974 Carnation Revolution are fresh in the minds of people. These revolutions were also like Jasmine fragrance where an unanticipated and extensive campaign of civil resistance was essence of people’s desire for change. Jasmine revolution had a peculiarity as it turned out to be a leaderless revolution where individuals joined to pull down the regimes of terror and tyranny. We should not shy away from the fact that this uprising extended in most of the west Asia and Gulf region will not lead people of this region anywhere near to democracy in near future but it can be termed as a prelude to the course of deciding their own future.

Jasmine fragrance, a spontaneous revolution ascending from the deserts of Arab world may or may not have got inspired from earlier rebellions in several regions of the world but surely and certainly it will forcefully kick off a change, influencing the landscape of world power in many ways. This revolution will not only ensure makeover of people’s destiny coming under the influence of Jasmine fragrance but will modify the world economic course either for the best or for the most terrible , depending upon the attitude of world order to deal with this unending diffusion of ions of aspiration for sovereignty and empowerment.
